The evolution of online money pot business models

Online money pot platforms keep changing their business model. This study traces seventeen years of pricing practices, with a focus on the recent shift: most players are moving to a model presented as "free", "with no hidden fees", funded by a "tip" or a "voluntary contribution". In October 2026, 9 of the 11 platforms studied work this way, with an optional commission prefilled in contributors' baskets.

Eleven dated histories

This part analyses, company by company, how the business model has changed, based on the public data available. It shows how these models have changed over time, and that most of today's platforms have moved to the prefilled optional commission.

The payment screen, where the amount added by default appears, is rarely kept by web archives. For the years where it is missing, we read the code of the contribution forms as the Wayback Machine archived it: each site sends this code to its visitors' browsers to display the form, and it contains the rule that calculates the amount offered by default. This reading makes it possible to recover that amount for any contribution, at the date of each capture. The passages that rely on it say so.

Leetchi.com

Leetchi.com opens in November 2009. The company Leetchi SA (SIREN company number 511 361 073) comes under the control of Crédit Mutuel Arkéa in 2015; since 2023, the money pot business has been run by Leetchi SAS (SIREN 907 495 204). Throughout the period, it is the organiser who pays: the contributor pays no fees and is asked for no optional commission.

Le Pot Commun · festive pots

Le Pot Commun is created in 2011 by the company Lakooz (SIREN 533 303 400). The BPCE group takes control of it in 2015 and folds it into Bimpli in 2021, then Swile buys Bimpli in 2022. The code of the festive pot pages, as the Wayback Machine archived it, contains a prefilled optional commission from April 2026, with variants chosen pot by pot; we do not know which pots showed it before August. For festive pots created since 3 August 2026, the bank transfer is free and the 6% is moved to the contribution. On a test pot created on 15 September, €3 is added by default to a €50 contribution; the contributor can bring it back to €0 in three actions, and the page still offers "I don't want to leave a tip" on 9 October. The pricing page, updated on 6 October, describes this 6% as running costs that each contributor chooses to add or deduct. Pots created before 3 August remain at 6% on bank transfer.38 39 1 40 41

    The prefilled optional commission is 6% of a €10 contribution (€0.60), 6% at €50 (€3), 6% at €100 (€6) and 6% at €200 (€12). It takes 3 actions to bring it back to €0.

According to the code of the charity pot page, live by 6 November 2024 at the latest and as the Wayback Machine archived it on 13 November, the form prefills an optional commission of 17% of the amount entered, adjustable from 0 to 30% with a slider. The form calls this amount a "tip". Between January and April 2025, the site adds the words "100% commission-free" and a free amount field (from €0.10 to €3,000).42 43 44 45

    The prefilled optional commission is 17% of a €10 contribution (€1.70), 17% at €50 (€8.50), 17% at €100 (€17) and 17% at €200 (€34).

    Four rates in five weeks

In August and September 2025, the prefilled rate changes four times: 10% on 11 August (slider from 0 to 20%), 14% on 25 August, 20% on 28 August, 16% on 1 September, then 14% from 13 September to mid-October. Each version of the code contains a single rate, the same for all contributors; from one version to the next, only this rate and the slider change: its maximum rises to 30% on 28 August, and the percentage is shown above it from 13 September. Varying both the screen and the amount suggested, then measuring what each version brings in, is the approach we describe in our study of the commission interface, where the amount suggested is drawn at random on each payment. The archived code does not say why Le Pot Commun changed its rate.46 47 48 49 50 51

HelloAsso

HelloAsso is founded in 2009 under the name Mailforgood; the platform takes the name HelloAsso in 2013. Contrary to what its name suggests, HelloAsso is not an association (the French legal form of non-profits): it is a simplified joint-stock company (SAS, SIREN 510 918 683), a subsidiary of Crédit Mutuel Maine-Anjou Basse-Normandie since 2017. No commission was found at any date: non-profits pay nothing, and the platform has been funded by a prefilled optional commission since 2013, under four successive schedules.

This amount is added to the total before the donor does anything. In April 2014, HelloAsso presents the "tip" as its main source of revenue.55 56 57

All the price curves

This chart overlays every platform's price curves: for a contribution of €10 to €200, the amount asked of the contributor by default (solid line), the fees imposed on them (dashes) and the commission the organiser pays on that contribution (dots), in euros; the detail of each amount, in euros and as a percentage, appears on hover. At €50, today's prefilled amounts range from 6% (Le Pot Commun, festive pots) to 16% (La Cagnotte des Proches). Most curves fall as the contribution rises; those of La Cagnotte des Proches, WhyDonate, Leetchi:org and Le Pot Commun's festive pots remain proportional.

Amounts are in euros, for each period of each platform. Commissions taken from the pot are calculated at the period's standard rate, applied to the contribution, and past years' curves are reconstructed from the archived code of the forms. Choose a date to keep only the curves in force that day, or a platform to isolate its curves.

The words used

How each platform names what it receives

In this study, as in our comparison, "optional commission" refers to what the platform asks of the contributor without imposing it, whatever name it gives it. This table shows, platform by platform, the words used on their own pages for what the platform receives, in the order in which they appear. Since the words themselves are the subject here, each French term is given in italics next to our translation.

Part 4

Method

What about Memorable?

Memorable is a money pot platform with no commission, paid through an optional commission, and is therefore part of the market described here. Since 24 August 2026, as part of our study, each contributor sees a randomly drawn screen: a free amount, a suggested amount or, only on pots whose organiser agreed to take part, a prefilled amount, which can be refunded after payment169. Our results and our position on how platforms should earn their income are published in our study.

Method

  • Scope. The study covers the platforms in our comparison (OnParticipe, Tribee, Le Pot Commun, HelloAsso, Leetchi:org, La Cagnotte des Proches, CotizUp, Donoor and WhyDonate), as well as Leetchi.com and Lydia. Le Pot Commun is shown on two lines, because its festive pots and its charity pots do not have the same prices.
  • Archives. For each platform, the list of Wayback Machine (Internet Archive) captures was gone through for the home, pricing, FAQ and terms of use pages and, where they exist, the contribution pages. Change dates are narrowed down by bisection between two captures.
  • Other sources. The study also relies on the terms of use in force, the activity reports of crowdfunding intermediaries (a French regulated status), annual reports, filed accounts (BCE/INPI ratios, from the French business registers), dated press articles and published comparisons. It dates past years' prefilled amounts from the code of the contribution forms kept by the Wayback Machine, and those of October 2026 from the surveys for our comparison, made on the public contribution pages.
  • Form code. The Wayback Machine rarely keeps the payment step, but it does keep the code files (JavaScript) that contribution pages load to display the form, and that every visitor receives in their browser. We read these files, version by version, to recover the rule that calculates the prefilled amount and the date of its first capture; past years' curves are recalculated from these rules. These files are public: they were read in the archives, without getting around any protection, and the code is not reproduced in the article. The archived forms of HelloAsso, CotizUp, La Cagnotte des Proches, OnParticipe, Leetchi:org, Donoor and Le Pot Commun's charity pots were also displayed in a browser, from the archived files alone, by typing or clicking an amount, without filling in any contact details and without any request reaching these sites; the cookie banner, which would not close in the archives, was hidden or left out of the frame. The images are cropped to the form, without the names of private individuals who organise the pot. When a file was not archived, the caption says so. Today's screens come from our comparison's surveys; the February 2024 Tribee screenshot was taken by the author.
  • Classification. A commission is taken from the pot and paid by the organiser. Mandatory fees are paid on each contribution. An optional commission is an amount intended for the platform that the contributor can refuse; each platform gives it its own name ("tip" – pourboire, "voluntary contribution" – contribution volontaire, "support" – soutien…), used as is in its description and in quotes. A prefilled optional commission is an optional commission whose amount is already added, preselected or presented as "suggested" before the contributor does anything. A period is classed as "prefilled" only from the first dated evidence.
  • Collection. No page behind anti-bot protection was bypassed; the sites concerned were read through the archives. No review site was collected. Requests to the platforms' sites were limited to a few public pages.
  • Outside this study. The amounts collected, the platforms' revenue and the performance of optional commissions are covered in a separate article.

Limitations

  • The archives are incomplete: a hatched or "not documented" period reflects the absence of a capture, not the absence of a practice. The payment step, where the prefilled optional commission appears, is rarely archived.
  • The date of the first prefilled amount is that of the oldest evidence found: for HelloAsso, CotizUp, WhyDonate, Tribee, OnParticipe, Leetchi:org and Le Pot Commun's charity pots, the first capture of the form code that calculates it, not the date it went live. Prefilling may be earlier.
  • Some questions remain open. We do not know when Lydia's 4% schedule came into force, what amounts OnParticipe offered by default before September 2026, or how CotizUp, Tribee and La Cagnotte des Proches presented their optional commission before the first archived versions of their forms.
  • PayPal's free money pot service (2017–2021), Papayoux and foreign platforms without a French site are not covered.
  • The date windows were narrowed on 12 October 2026, capture by capture. Two remain wide for lack of archives: CotizUp in 2017, as no donation page was archived between February and July, and WhyDonate between June 2024 and May 2025, whose successive versions of the donation code were not archived. For WhyDonate, the May 2025 date relies on the file that tells the browser which version of the donation code to load.

The data

The data file covers every period of the study, with one row per platform and per period. Each row gives the period's dates and the window in which the change took place, the business model, who pays (the organiser, out of the pot, or the contributor, on top of their contribution), the full schedule, a quote and the sources. The JSON file also contains the definition of each model. In this English edition, the files are translated, quotes included.
